Organizational charts are the graphical depiction of an organization's internal structure. It represents the relationships among different management and workers tiers—for example, reporting relationships and chain of command within the organization.

a. Hierarchical Organizational Model

c. Flat Organizational Model

A flat organizational model is a preferred organizational model for startups and new organizations. The reason being that it removes specific layers that may not exist in smaller setups like middle management. This kind of organization facilitates quick decision-making. However, as the company grows, you might want to shift to some other organizational model because a flat organizational structure cannot adjust to substantial changes.

    There are different types of entities in organizational charts. For example:

    1. You can make a generalized chart where the posts like Managing Director, Sales Manager, etc.
    2. Detailed Information. Here you can add more information. However, the recommendation is that detailed information that is more than a few lines must be included as hyperlinks.
    3. This makes org charts rather attractive. You can see the photo of the position holder along with the name, designation, etc.
    • Connections

    Connections are lines that show relationships among entities like lines of command, communication, or the reporting relationship.

    1. Solid Line. It means these two entities have a primary relationship. Like the Sales Manager is reporting to the Managing Director.
    2. Dotted Line. This dotted or dashed line depicts secondary relationships. The secondary relationship may mean indirect reporting or temporary connections. Like you may have a full-time reporting manager. But for a quick task, your services are delegated to another team, you report to their manager for a particular task. You have a solid line relationship with your full-time manager and a dotted line with the temporary manager.

    Tips for Making an Organizational Chart

    1. Try to arrange your organizational chart in a way that it fits one page. You can use a combination of vertical and horizontal arrangements to fit your chart into a single page.

    3. If you have employees with two titles, represent them in two different boxes. It adds clarity to your chart.
